Twenty and a half million people in America are in deep poverty, that is 6.7 percent of the population of all the states. America is known to be the affluent part of the world but this prenotion illusions people to think that there is no such thing as poverty in America. To inform the general public of this country, this article covers why poverty in America is a significant problem, what is causing poverty in America, and the solutions to these problems.
Many people in America might not recognize poverty in America as a significant problem due to the preconception of it’s wealth. Although it is true that this nation is the wealthiest country in the world, the wealth distribution is very unequal. While the top 1 percent takes 42 percent of the financial wealth, the bottom 80 percent of the population shares 5 percent of the financial wealth of the country. This unequal distribution of wealth is alarming to our society because researches have shown that obesity, mental illness, drug and alcohol abuse, homicides, imprisonment rates, lowered life expectancy, over consumption of resources, teen pregnancy and the lack of social mobility are all related to unequal wealth distribution of one’s society.
The unequal distribution of wealth, otherwise known as poverty, causes many problems such as shown above. The right question to ask at this moment would be “what is causing poverty in America?”. The primary cause of poverty in the United States are social or racial grouping and stereotyping, isolation from social interactions and opportunities, lack of knowledge, employment skills, education and resources. Poverty tends to stay within a family through generations because the poor are usually stuck with others that are poor which provides an environment lacking necessary things that leads to success.
Americans have been trying to end poverty in it’s nation but it has failed to do so. In order to end poverty successfully we need to know what is needed to accomplish this goal. Looking at the future, the government need to help those who are in poverty right now, especially their children. Youngs of our country are the future of our nation. In order to prevent future poverty, which in turn will end the poverty by preventing it, what is necessary is to provide a proper education opportunities for those less fortunate people. As cliche it is to say that the educations is the key, it has proven itself to be true.
It may not be possible to get rid of all the poverty in the world or even just in our country but we can help each other to reduce the pain of the people who suffers. As for now, the best we can do is to help the poor by providing their bare necessities like food, shelter, and education. If we continue to help those in need in the future there will be a better day for all of us.
